Parquet laying

No matter how quickly modern industry develops, offering more and more solutions for decorative floor coverings, the classic still remains the classic, without the slightest intention to lose its place. Natural hardwood flooring will never be out of style or outdated, and will continue to attract lovers of exquisite classic interiors. We will discuss this in this article where we will examine in detail how the floor is laid, how we can assemble it by ourselves and what materials should be used for this purpose.

Laying parquet: a few words on the preparation of the base.

If you think that for a board of 1 cm thick or more, bumps and holes are not dangerous, you are mistaken: it's quite the contrary! The loads that occur during the daily wear and tear of the hardwood in these places are able to deteriorate the flooring very rapidly. First, there will be infractions in the locks, and if you wait a little time, cracks in between the individual boards. Therefore, the preparation of the base for the laying of parquet should be taken in the most serious way.

Base preparation

The hardwood floor is placed on a perfectly flat surface that can be prepared in two ways. If it is a concrete surface, a grader is used for the right alignment of the ground. The surface is then smoothed by the wooden plates that will constitute your floors. If you already have an old wooden floor installed, there is no guarantee that the installation of a new hardwood floor will produce a smooth and perfect final product. So the only solution is to remove everything, and install all new hardwood. Your floor must necessarily be covered with plywood, which in thickness exceeds the floor by 5 mm. The plywood can be fixed either with dowels or with screws.

Pattern selection

To make it easier to understand the whole technological process in which flooring can be done by yourself, we will divide it into several steps - board laying, sanding or polishing and varnishing. The floor is laid in the following way.

The process starts with the selection of the pattern and laying structure of its individual elements. After all, we hope you do not think that plates can be stacked at random! The most common pattern that can be made using parquet boards is a Christmas tree, a square or a diamond. In principle, no one prevents you from imagining and creating your own structure for laying parquet. When the drawing is selected, you can proceed to the direct laying of the floor. Here everything is simple - depending on the pattern chosen, the floorboards are glued one after the other. You must examine their close juxtaposition to each other. In addition, do not forget the effects of temperature change. It is necessary to provide a transition along the perimeter of the walls of each room, which would allow the expansion of the floorboards. For this reason, a special glue for parquet is used. It has a certain elasticity that allows it to deform by keeping the surface of the ground intact. At the end of the laying, the parquet is left for some time, until the glue dries completely. Do not be afraid, if there are small residues between boards, in most cases, they disappear during the execution of the following stages of the work.

Parquet laying

The next step is to eliminate all the factory defects of the floor and the defects of its installation. During the process of sanding or polishing the floors, defects and gaps in the preparation of the base will begin to appear on the surface of your floor. It must be understood that the greater the curvature of the floors that you can see, the greater the thickness of the board that will be needed during this operation. What is the problem when you're reducing the thickness of your parquet? It also leads to the shortening of its life! The sanding of the floor by itself is carried out using specialized sanding machines - acquiring such a device for a one time job seems insane. It is much more practical to rent it or to borrow it for a certain time from acquaintances, if, of course, there are some. Depending on the surface of the parquet floor, you can use its gradual leveling: first with the planer, you can cycle and then rectify the floor, which provides the ideal surface. If you did everything right and paid enough attention to the preparatory steps of the job, the result will be perfect!

Parquet sanding

Intermediate stage of work. This time, it is necessary to eliminate the remaining defects in the form of spaces between the individual planks. They are removed with a putty, prepared on the basis of PVA glue and broken on a sawdust of coffee grinder. After the putty is dry, the floor is sanded several times.

The last stage of the work is the varnishing of the floors. This last step takes place in several stages. To obtain a high-quality decorative protective coating, the parquet is varnished in two or even three or four layers. One thing must be understood - the thicker the layer of varnish, the deeper the image will be. In addition, a layer of thick varnish can restore the appearance of some imperfections of your floor. Each layer of varnish applied to the parquet surface must be completely dry before applying the next layer.

Parquet varnishing

Well in conclusion, I would like to say a few words about the parquet pattern - it can be formed not only by the direction the individual planks, but also by special penetrating impregnations. This is done before laying the planks: first the necessary surface is impregnated, then it is laid. If not, it is impossible to obtain a clear and uniform model image. The absorption must be abundant, so that the layer of colored wood is not removed during the sanding or polishing of the soil.
